Reporting to the Manufacturing Manager the Machinist fabricates component parts where set-ups are non-routine and tolerance are difficult to acquire and maintain.
Operates and sets up a variety of machine tool equipment to extremely close and complex tolerance including drill presses, punch presses, brakes, sheers, grinders, graining machines, numerical control equipment and other hand and power tools of similar complexity.
Reads and interprets blueprints, production diagrams and assembly drawings.
Makes complex measurements and advanced shop math calculations relative to tolerances, dimensions, tooling, feed and speed.
May inspect fabricated parts.
Checks height, depth and thickness using vernier, calipers, gauges and other precision measuring equipment.
May prepare recommendations to modify shop math methods or processes, relative to improved productivity and quality.
May provide numerical control (NC) program support.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
